Why Stanford Is Harder Than Harvard

Applicant quality at the very top is essentially interchangeable — the difference is arithmetic. Stanford fills about 435 seats; HBS fills over 940. Similar applicant pools divided by very different denominators produce 6% versus 11%. The same logic explains Haas at 12% with a class of just 273: small classes make selective schools even more selective per seat.

Selectivity Is a Difficulty Gauge, Not a Quality Score

Acceptance rate measures how hard a school is to enter, not how much it is worth attending. Tuck's 16% reflects a rural location and a self-selecting applicant pool, not weaker outcomes — its placement and compensation compete with schools half as accepting. Build your list around goals and fit, use the M7-versus-T15 distinction where it genuinely matters (see M7 vs T15 MBA programs), and apply in round 1 or 2 with a list that spans at least two selectivity tiers.
