California Is a Legal Market Unto Itself
California has more ABA-accredited law schools than any other state — over 20 — and for good reason. It is home to the largest state bar in the country, the entertainment capital of the world, and Silicon Valley. If you want to practise law in California, going to law school in California matters more than it does in almost any other state.
Here is what you should know about the top programs.
The Elite Tier
Stanford Law School
Median LSAT: 174. Median GPA: 3.93. Acceptance rate: ~6%. Stanford is one of the three hardest law schools to get into and produces a disproportionate number of Supreme Court clerks and Silicon Valley legal leaders. If you are below a 170 LSAT, Stanford is a Far Reach regardless of GPA.
UC Berkeley School of Law
Median LSAT: 171. Median GPA: 3.82. Acceptance rate: ~12%. Berkeley is the best public law school in the country and dominates the Northern California legal market. Its clinics and public interest programs are particularly strong. A 168+ LSAT with a 3.7+ GPA makes you competitive.
UCLA School of Law
Median LSAT: 171. Median GPA: 3.82. Acceptance rate: ~15%. UCLA commands the Southern California market the way Berkeley commands the north. Entertainment law, business law, and public interest are strengths. Numbers are nearly identical to Berkeley, but UCLA tends to weight work experience slightly more.
The Strong Middle Tier
USC Gould School of Law
Median LSAT: 168. Median GPA: 3.82. Acceptance rate: ~16%. USC competes directly with UCLA in Southern California and has a powerful alumni network in entertainment and business law. Slightly more accessible numerically than UCLA, but not by much.
UC Irvine School of Law
Median LSAT: 166. Median GPA: 3.76. Acceptance rate: ~20%. The youngest law school in the UC system, UCI has risen rapidly in the rankings by investing heavily in clinics and public interest. A strong option for applicants who want a UC education with somewhat more accessible numbers.
UC Davis School of Law
Median LSAT: 163. Median GPA: 3.65. Acceptance rate: ~28%. Davis is a strong regional school with excellent employment outcomes in Sacramento and the Central Valley. It offers a lower cost of living than the Bay Area or LA schools, which affects your ROI calculation significantly.
Regional Powerhouses
Schools like UC Hastings (now UC Law SF), Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Santa Clara, and San Diego serve their local markets well. LSAT medians range from 157 to 163, making them accessible to a wider range of applicants. If you intend to practise in a specific California region, the local school often provides the strongest alumni network.
In-State vs. Out-of-State
California's public law schools (Berkeley, UCLA, Davis, Irvine, UC Law SF) offer significant tuition discounts for California residents — often $20,000–$30,000 less per year than out-of-state tuition. If you are not a California resident, factor this into your ROI calculation.
The Bar Exam Factor
California's bar exam is one of the hardest in the country. First-time pass rates vary dramatically by school — from over 90% at Stanford and Berkeley to under 50% at some unaccredited schools. When evaluating a California law school, bar passage rate should be a primary consideration.
