The OptomCAS Cycle
Optometry schools use a centralised application service called OptomCAS, administered by the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO). The application cycle typically follows this pattern:
- Late June: OptomCAS opens for the next entering class
- July–October: Primary application period (most schools have rolling deadlines)
- October–February: Interview invitations sent on a rolling basis
- December–April: Acceptance decisions issued
- August: Classes begin
Most optometry schools use rolling admissions, meaning earlier applicants have an advantage. Submitting your application in July or August puts you ahead of the wave that arrives in September and October.
Month-by-Month Timeline
12–15 months before matriculation (April–June of your junior year)
- Begin OAT preparation. Most students need 2–4 months of dedicated study.
- Research programmes and start building your school list using AdmitBase match scores.
- Ask recommenders. Give them 6–8 weeks before you need the letters.
- Draft your personal statement. Start early — good statements require multiple revisions.
10–12 months before matriculation (June–August)
- Take the OAT. Ideal timing is June or July so your scores are ready when OptomCAS opens.
- OptomCAS opens in late June. Begin filling out the application immediately.
- Submit your primary application by mid-August for maximum advantage with rolling admissions.
- Finalise your personal statement and upload letters of recommendation.
8–10 months before matriculation (September–November)
- Complete any supplemental applications required by individual schools.
- Interview invitations begin arriving. Prepare thoroughly for each school's format.
- Continue accumulating clinical shadowing hours — schools may ask about recent experience in interviews.
5–8 months before matriculation (December–March)
- Attend interviews. Each school has its own format — individual interviews, group interviews, MMI (multiple mini interviews), or panel interviews.
- Acceptance offers begin arriving. You typically have a few weeks to respond.
- Compare financial aid packages across schools.
3–5 months before matriculation (April–June)
- Accept your offer and submit your deposit.
- Complete any remaining prerequisite coursework.
- Arrange housing near your school.
- Complete onboarding paperwork — immunisations, background checks, technical standards forms.
If You're Applying Late
Submitting after October is not ideal but not fatal. Some programmes have specific deadlines as late as February or March. However, with rolling admissions, later applicants compete for fewer remaining seats. If you're running late, prioritise schools with later deadlines and make sure every other element of your application is strong.
